Day trips from Bibury
Bibury sits near the centre of the Cotswolds, which means almost everywhere worth visiting is within an hour's drive. Here are the day trips we'd recommend, whether you want a market town morning, a city afternoon, or a full day of exploring.
Cirencester
The 'Capital of the Cotswolds'. A proper market town with independent shops, a stunning parish church, and a weekly market. The Corinium Museum is small but excellent if you're interested in Roman history. Good for a morning wander and lunch.
Bourton-on-the-Water
Known as the Venice of the Cotswolds for its low bridges over the River Windrush. It can be busy in summer, but arrive early and you'll see why it earns the comparison. The Model Village is unexpectedly charming.
Burford
Often called the gateway to the Cotswolds. The high street descends steeply towards the River Windrush, lined with stone buildings housing tea rooms, bookshops, and galleries. Quieter than Bourton and all the better for it.
Stow-on-the-Wold
A hilltop market town with antique shops, galleries, and a famous doorway at St Edward's Church that looks like something from a fantasy novel. Less crowded than Bourton, more character. The Thursday market is worth timing your visit around.
Blenheim Palace
Churchill's birthplace and one of England's finest stately homes. The grounds alone are worth the visit, especially the formal gardens and the lakeside walk designed by Capability Brown. Allow a full day.
Oxford
World-class museums (the Ashmolean, Pitt Rivers, all free), stunning college architecture, covered markets, and punting on the river. A full day, easily. The Bodleian Library tour is worth booking in advance.
Stratford-upon-Avon
Shakespeare's birthplace. Even if the Bard isn't your thing, the town is lovely, the river walks are beautiful, and the RSC theatre is world-class. A matinee performance followed by dinner on the river is a perfect day out.
Bath
Georgian architecture, the Roman Baths, the Royal Crescent, and excellent restaurants. Worth a full day. Park at one of the park-and-ride sites to avoid city centre traffic. The Thermae Bath Spa is a treat if you're in no hurry.
