Finding Shade and a Cool Drink in Bibury

When the sun is truly shining in the Cotswolds, and we are lucky enough to have these glorious summer days, sometimes all you want is a little shade and something cool to drink. Bibury, with the River Coln running through it, offers some lovely spots to escape the heat for a while.

My favourite way to find a cool retreat is a gentle walk along the river. You can set off from just outside Riverside Cottage, heading towards the village centre. The path here is often shaded by the mature trees lining the riverbanks, offering a natural canopy. It is usually a very pleasant temperature even on the warmest afternoons, and the sound of the water is wonderfully soothing.

Once you are ready for that cold drink, The Swan Hotel is a good option. Their garden often has shaded tables, and it is a lovely spot to sit by the river with a glass of something refreshing. It is just a short stroll from Arlington Row, so you can still enjoy the view without being directly in the sun.

Alternatively, if you fancy a slightly different outlook, the Catherine Wheel pub in Arlington also has a pleasant outdoor space, often with a cooler breeze. It is a short walk from the cottages, perhaps fifteen minutes at a gentle pace, and offers a traditional pub atmosphere. A cold drink in the shade is always welcome on a warm day.

For those staying at Green Hideaway or Rosemary Cottage, a shaded spot on The Green with a book and a cold drink can be just as good. A good book and a tall glass of iced tea can be just the thing before the evening starts to cool. Enjoy these lovely long days.
