Green Hideaway and The Green in high summer

Green Hideaway is the quietest of our three cottages, and in high summer that is its whole appeal. It sits directly on The Green, looking out over open space and honey-stone cottages rather than the come and go of visitors. For a family who want somewhere to land properly for a week, it is the one I would choose.

It is also the newest of the three, and the calmest. While the rest of Bibury fills up by day, the cottage keeps its own pace, set back on The Green with birdsong coming through the windows and the village happening at a polite distance.

The door onto The Green

The thing that makes it work for families is simple. The Green is right there, on the other side of the door, open and grassy and gentle. Younger children can be out on it while you keep half an eye from inside, and there is no road to worry about in the way you would in most places. It takes the edge off a family holiday in a way that is hard to put a price on.

In summer that arrangement comes into its own. You can carry breakfast out, the children find their own entertainment within sight of the windows, and the morning sorts itself out with very little input from you. By the time you are ready for the day, everyone has already had an hour outside.

I will be candid about what The Green is and is not. It is not a playground. There is no equipment, no fenced enclosure, none of that. It is open grass and old cottages and space, which is precisely the point and precisely what most families seem to want once they are here. Children find their own games on it, the way they used to, and the quiet does the rest. If you are looking for organised entertainment on the doorstep, this is not the cottage. If you want somewhere they can simply be outside, it is hard to better.

Inside, when the day cools

The living room is built around an open fire and window seats, which sounds like a winter detail but earns its place in summer too, on the cooler evenings the valley always seems to find. The kitchen is simple and well equipped, the dining table sits everyone, and there is space to spread out without falling over each other.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms, each with a king-size bed, and a sofa bed downstairs takes the count to six. I will be honest, it is most comfortable for four, so a family of that size has room to breathe rather than just room to fit. Six will fit, and have done happily, but two adults and two children is the configuration the cottage was really made for, and that is the booking I would steer you towards if it suits. The bathroom has a shower over the bath with reliably good pressure, which is more of a relief than it should be in an old village.

The open fire is worth a mention even in a summer post, because Cotswold evenings have a habit of turning cool after a hot day, and there is something settling about lighting it at the end of one. The children come in from The Green, the window seats fill up, and the cottage does the rest. It is the kind of detail you do not book a summer holiday for and end up remembering all the same.

Getting out and about

Arlington Row is a five-minute walk, and the village proper is the same, so you are never far from the heart of Bibury even though the cottage feels a world away from it. The Swan is close for a meal out, and for the curious, Diddly Squat Farm Shop is about half an hour by car, which keeps the older children happy on a quieter day. Twig and Eleven are good for a coffee or a light lunch during the day.

Parking is easier here than most of Bibury: one car fits on the drive, with free parking a short walk from the door for a second. Once you have, you rarely need it again, which is part of what makes a week here feel like a proper break.

If you are after somewhere genuinely quiet for a summer family stay, with the outdoors a step from the door and the village close enough to enjoy on your own terms, Green Hideaway is the one. Tell us your dates and we will see what we can do.
